Thousands of Albanian citizens have protested for over a week against plans to build tourist resorts in the ecologically sensitive Pishë Poro-Nartë protected area, leading to protests that have broadened into broader discontent with the government. The opposition centers on the “Zvërnec Peninsula” project, which involves developing residential areas and hotels. Initial protests escalated after alleged violence during demonstrations and concerns over the state’s handling of the situation. Activists argue that development must be sustainable and that public lands cannot become private property. While Prime Minister Edi Rama dismisses the protests as unfounded or part of a “hybrid war” orchestrated by external enemies, protesters are demanding systemic changes, including repealing laws that grant privileges to strategic investors. The article also notes the unclear ownership structure of the development project and mentions past interest from figures like Jared Kushner in Albanian coastal areas.
