Alexandru Munteanu, a physicist by training with postgraduate studies from Columbia University and extensive experience in international finance, is set to become Moldova’s next prime minister with a mandate focused on EU accession. Following a parliamentary election won by the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), President Maia Sandu appointed the 61-year-old investment fund manager and former World Bank employee to form the government. Munteanu will be tasked with stabilizing Moldova’s economy and implementing necessary reforms for EU integration, a process accelerated by the war in Ukraine and alleged Russian interference. While Munteanu brings significant business and investment experience, he has faced scrutiny regarding past offshore dealings revealed in the Pandora Papers and former ties to a Cypriot law firm linked to Kremlin-connected clients. He has since defended his past practices, stating he ceased dealings with the implicated entities and that his use of offshore jurisdictions was standard international financial practice.
